Can Hemp Help With Depression?
The American Psychiatric Association reported that every sixth person has experienced depression at some time during their lifetime! Now consider two more numbers i.e. 1 and 15 i.e. one in every 15 people have been diagnosed with depression in a single year. If you or a loved one suffers from depression, you already understand how debilitating it can be for your life. Each year, more and more people are coming home with this diagnosis.
However, there is hope for these people! Hemp oil has shown anti-depressant characteristics. It is a natural product that can help alleviate some, if not all, of the symptoms of depression.
How does Hemp oil do that? In our bodies, there is a group of cell receptors. Together with the molecules associated with them and known as the agonists, they form the endocannabinoid system. This system is in control of various functions that are essential for a good life, including pain, sleep, mood, appetite, and pleasure. Hemp oil and products containing Hemp work on this system. According to this research, Tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) found in Hemp oil can trigger brain’s endocannabinoid system. This can have a positive effect on how an individual responds to negative emotions or images.
Let us look at some of the research that proves how effective Hemp is against depression:
A 2006 study reported that cannabis consumers displayed fewer symptoms of depressions than those who didn’t regularly use cannabis.
In 2009, a study displayed that there was pharmacological potential in it to be used to help alleviate the symptoms of depression.
In 2011, a study was conducted on how endocannabinoid signaling affected the serotonin system. It showed that the endocannabinoid system produced regulators that help modulate the response of the system. With the help of the endocannabinoids, it was possible to control stress responses. Since depression often comes on during times of stress, which is also its leading cause, Hemp application might help bring it under control. Moreover, Hemp oil also has a stabilizing effect on a person’s moods.
Another study was conducted by the institutions, Brazilian University of San Paulo and King’s College in London. Its results showed that high concentrations of Hemp were able to activate a serotonin receptor, directly. The receptor, known as the 5-HT1A (hydroxytryptamine), produces a chemical that can reduce the anxiety felt by someone in depression.
In research that took place in 2014, it was observed that Hemp acted both like an anti-depressant an anxiolytic-like compound. Anxiolytic substances can reduce panic and anxiety. The study used animal models for research and put them several stress-inducing scenarios. The study group that was treated with Hemp showed less anxiety and depressions systems even after taking part in swim and conflict tests. They were also made to find their way through a maze!
